GE washer and dryer repair, Springfield MO
GE kept a mechanical transmission on top loaders where much of the market moved to direct drive, and newer GTW machines use a mode shifter and a hall sensor to swap between agitate and spin. It is a different diagnosis from everything else on this page.
What actually fails on a GE
Three faults that come up far more often than the rest on this platform.
Mode shifter and hall sensor
A GTW-era GE that agitates but will not spin, or spins but will not agitate, is usually the shifter or the sensor reading it, rather than the motor.
Water level pressure sensor
A GE that overfills or stops short is more often the pressure sensor or its hose than the inlet valve. The hose blocks and the machine stops being told what it has.
Transmission on older top loaders
This is the one that ends the conversation. On an older GE a failed transmission is usually the point at which the repair stops making sense, and you will be told that plainly.
GE error codes, and what they do not tell you
A code narrows the area. It does not name the part, and anyone quoting a repair off a code alone is guessing.
Many GE machines have no code display and signal faults by blinking the lid lock light instead, which is why a GE diagnosis leans on testing rather than on reading a screen.
Commonly the lid lock, the striker, or a machine refusing to spin because it never finished draining.
GE dryers
GE dryers fail at the heater circuit, the terminal block at the back of the cabinet and the drum bearing. The terminal block is worth knowing about: when it scorches it can damage the cord and the outlet behind the machine as well, so it is not a part to keep running on.
